U.S. API Group I capacity was 63,600 b/d, Group II and III capacity reached 105,600 b/d, and napththenics capacity reached 48,100 b/d, all unchanged from 2011.

According to Lube Report research, the largest upcoming U.S. capacity change remains Chevrons planned 25,000 b/d Group II base oil facility, with estimated completion in 2013, at its Pascagoula, Miss., refinery.

The North American rerefining market is busy adding new players. Heritage-Crystal Clean inJanuary announced startup of the second phase of its rerefinery in Indianapolis and its plants first production ofGroup II base oil. The rerefinery is expected to eventually recycle up to 50 million gallons of used oil and produce up to 30 million gallons of base oil, or about 2,000 barrels per day.

In late January 2012, Avista Oil AG of Germany acquired a majority stake in Universal Environmental Services, which is building a new rerefinery in Peachtree City, Ga., expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2013. In early 2011, Avista acquired a 50 percent stake in UES, enabling it to grow its used oil collection business and plan the base oil rerefinery. Plans call for a plant that can process 30 million gallons of waste oil per year and can be capable of producingGroup II base oil.

NexLube Tampa expects its rerefinery and blending plant project in Florida, scheduled to be fully in operation by the end of 2013, will produce white oils as well as Group II base oil. The facility is expected to process 24 million gallons of used oil annually, and produce about 20 million gallons per year of Group II base oil in three cuts: SN85, N150 and 330 plus.
