API Unveils New Logo for SAE 0W-16

The North American auto industry now has a formal schedule for commercial introduction of the next passenger car motor oil standards and a new certification mark - a shield - for low viscosity SAE 0W-16 products.

Grease Production Dips in North America

Lubricating grease production in North America declined 4.2 percent in 2018, according to the National Lubricating Grease Institutes yearly survey, which was released this week. Production of greases made with aluminum soap and calcium soap thickeners showed growth, while those made with lithium soap and polyurea each experienced declines.

LSC Jamaica to Add Second Blending Plant

Lubricating Specialties Co. Jamaica Ltd. plans to expand its Rockfort, Jamaica, facility to add a lubricants blending plant - its second in the Caribbean island country - by the first quarter of 2020, a company official confirmed to Lube Report.

Thom Smith, 63, vice president of branded lubricant technology at Valvoline, died on June 3. Smith, who joined Valvoline in 1997, worked for more than 40 years in the lubricant industry, including in roles with Shell, Gulf Canada and Petro-Canada, Ultramar and Lubrizol. Active in American Petroleum Institute and ASTM forums, he represented Valvoline on the API Lubricants Group, served as chair of ASTM’s Passenger Car Engine Oil Classification Panel for 13 years and most recently was chair of the API Category Life Oversight Group. Cincinnati, Ohio-based RelaDyne acquired lubricants distributor Legacy Fueling and Lubricants, headquartered in Victoria, Texas.
