One person was killed and four others injured by an explosion last week at a metalworking fluids and chemicals complex operated by Ivhimprom in Ivanovo, Russia, according to the Emergency Situation Ministry for Ivanovo Oblast.

The June 23 accident was triggered by a sudden decompression in a gas compressor unit, the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry for Ivanovo Oblast reported. All of those injured were employees of Ivhimprom, one of the oldest chemicals producers in Russia. At least some of the men were transferred to a hospital, and one of them subsequently died there.

The facility building itself was not affected by the explosion. A fire did break out, but Ivhimprom employees, with assistance from the local firefighting brigade, extinguished it in less than an hour, the ministry said, adding that the plants production was interrupted for only a few hours. By deadline, Ivhimprom did not respond to Lube Reports requests for comment.

Based in Ivanovo, a city located 250 kilometers northeast of Moscow, Ivhimprom produces metalworking fluids and cooling liquids, surfactants, fire extinguishing foams, fuel additives and other chemical products.

Created in 1838, the Ivanovo chemicals complex is one of the oldest chemical producers in Russia.
